History

United Community Credit Union, formerly United Industries Credit Union, formerly Gardner Denver Employees Credit Union, was organized on June 19, 1941 specifically for the purpose of serving Gardner Denver Employees.

The Gardner Denver Company, founded in 1859, was the original sponsor, with a location in Quincy, Illinois and the LaGrange Foundry in LaGrange, Missouri. The Credit Union was located within the sponsor plant at Quincy.

In the early 80's a major downturn in the petroleum business had a significant impact upon the Gardner Denver Company and the Credit Union experienced a similar loss of business, but to a lesser degree.

In order to perpetuate the Credit Union, it was necessary to expand its base of operation and the by-laws and articles of incorporation were revised October 17, 1984 to include family members of Gardner Denver employees. Now family members of Gardner Denver employees who were members could also join the Credit Union.

As those family members joined it was necessary to accommodate them with an off-site location for transacting their business. Space was leased and a branch office was established and opened April 1, 1985 at 1118 Broadway in Quincy, Illinois.

With the foresight of many volunteers, serving as Board of Directors, and a strong management team, on November 1, 1985 the Board elected to allow select employee groups. Prince Manufacturing and Prince Agri-Products employees became eligible to join, followed by Family Planning and Deters Dairy employees.

On October 23, 1987 the by-laws and articles of incorporation were amended to change the name to UNITED INDUSTRIES CREDIT UNION, thereby reflecting the diversified employee membership base.

In 1988 Knapheide Manufacturing and Walter Louis Chemicals employees became eligible to join with others soon to follow.

Outgrowing our leased office, with members standing outside the door on a Friday evening to transact business, land was purchased in November of 1990 and a new facility was completed.

The branch credit union moved into its new home at 1001 Vermont, Quincy, Illinois. This location became the main office with a branch still located within the sponsor company Gardner Denver, which became Cooper Industries, and now is again Gardner Denver Company.

As corporations changed, credit unions were requested to move from sponsoring locations, our Credit Union was no exception. June 25, 1992 the branch incorporated with the main office in the new facility on Vermont.

The membership continued to grow and with the addition of other employee groups in Illinois and Missouri, including Hannibal Regional Hospital's employees, many members were now working and residing both in Illinois and Missouri.

Office space was leased from Hannibal Regional Hospital, and a branch was opened in Hannibal, Missouri July of 1997 in the Hannibal Regional Office Center on Virginia Street in Hannibal, Missouri.

The Hannibal office was not very convenient for members to access, and to better serve our Missouri members, a new branch facility was erected and opened April 3, 2002 at 109 Lindsey Road, Hwy 36, Hannibal, Missouri.

Due to the success of our facilities, friends of our members and individuals from the community were also requesting membership into the credit union. We were turning potential members away because they were not eligible to join. With careful consideration and many planning sessions of the Board of Directors and management, it was decided to pursue a community charter.

A special meeting of the membership was held, and on October 15, 2002, our charter amendment and articles of incorporation were approved and United Industries Credit Union became United Community Credit Union, serving the people who live or work in Adams, Brown, Hancock, Pike, or Schuyler counties in Illinois and Lewis, Marion, and Ralls counties in Missouri. Individuals living or working in these counties became eligible to join.

In August of 2008 we opened our third location at 3633 Maine St. This was done in response to more traffic moving to the east side of Quincy and to make it more convenient for our members.

In May of 2012, the BASF Credit Union merged into UCCU, adding approximately 250 members.  Two months later, Hometown Credit Union in Quincy merged into UCCU, adding approximately 1,000 more members.

In April of 2016, Great River Community Credit Union in Quincy merged into UCCU, taking the total UCCU membership to just over 10,500 members.

We now have four great full service locations to serve our members!

A heartfelt “THANK YOU” to you – our members – and your employers who offer the benefit of membership.  You can be proud that you are the reason for this success story!
